Appointing a woman of color to the Supreme Court is one of the promises Joe Biden made during the campaign, news.ro reports.
With Judge Breyer’s retirement, Biden has a chance to keep his word and appoint the first woman of color as a Supreme Court judge.
“Our process will be rigorous. I will select a candidate worthy of Judge Breyer’s legacy of excellence and decency. I have made no decision other than one – the person I will nominate will be someone with extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity, and that person will be the first woman of color ever nominated to the United States Supreme Court. This was long overdue from my point of view. “
This is the first time during Biden’s tenure that a nine-member tribunal has been appointed. His predecessor, Donald Trump, appointed 3 judges during his 4-year term. The Conservative majority of the Court, 6-3, has stated its desire to reshape the law on litigation issues, including gun rights and abortion.
Stephen Breyer, 83, has announced his retirement from a 27-year career in the Supreme Court. The announcement was made officially in a letter to the US president, made public on Thursday. Parliament also announced the withdrawal of the judge on Wednesday.
