This burglary at the Grünes Gewölbe Museum, a Saxon heritage institution at the end of 2019, stunned the value of the stolen objects by more than 100 million euros.
Six defendants, including two juveniles at the time, are on trial for the theft involving another 40 people, who are still wanted.
The passivity of four guards initially intrigued investigators, but at this stage there are no concerns due to lack of evidence.
Arrested in November 2020 in Berlin, after months of video and DNA analysis, the suspects belong to a criminal gang of very active Lebanese origin in Germany, known as the “Remmo clan”.
The security device was tightened around the court during this process. Defendants face up to 10 years in prison.
The robbery took place at the end of November 2019 and the thieves stole dozens of pieces containing several hundred diamonds, including a 49-carat one.
The thieves entered the “Green Vault” Museum, which houses one of the oldest and best-preserved collections of treasures in Europe, through a window with bars that they cut, in the early hours of November 25, 2019, and they used an ax to smash the shop windows in the room where the jewelry was. The white diamond from Dresden and the star of the Polish Order of the White Eagle were among more than two dozen stolen pieces. The management of Grünes Gewölbe characterized the stolen objects of “invaluable” historical and cultural value.
